Scholarships

Decision Making Policy

The decision making body for granting Scholarships is the Board of Directors. However, the Scholarship/Grant Committee has the responsibility for reviewing scholarship applications and making recommendations to the Board of Directors.


Scholarship Qualifications

Scholarships will be considered for the following students:
  1. Medical students (Not including residents and fellows) who reside in the geographical area of the Western Michigan Osteopathic Association who have been accepted to medical education programs accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and who plan to practice osteopathic medicine. Although not required, recipient will be urged to practice osteopathic medicine in the geographical boundaries of the Western Michigan Osteopathic Association.
  2. Osteopathic manipulative medicine and osteopathic physical medicine and rehabilitation residents and fellows who provide the Foundation with adequate assurances that they will establish practices in the geographical area of the Western Michigan Osteopathic Association.
  3. Scholarship funds are to be used for related tuition and fees and for instruction related fees, books, supplies and equipment.
  4. Scholarship recipients will be required to submit a report verifying satisfactory academic progress each year scholarship money is granted.
  5. As a condition of payment of scholarship money to a medical student, the medical student must agree to participate in the Osteochamps program as a mentor for a High School Osteochamps participant sponsored by the Foundation.
  6. PHYSICIAN RECRUITMENT: The Foundation will annually offer recruitment scholarships to Residents graduating from Mercy General Health Partners residency programs who commit to practicing osteopathic medicine in the Michigan Counties of Ottawa, Muskegon or Oceana.

    In addition to this, on a case by case basis and as an off budget item, the Foundation will consider scholarships for osteopathic physicians for fellowships and residencies at programs accredited by the American Osteopathic Association or the American Council of Graduate Medical Education and loan repayment grants to graduates of osteopathic residencies provided the Foundation determines there is a need for the specialty in the service area of WMOA, there is a need for the scholarship or grant and the osteopathic physician provides the Foundation with assurances satisfactory to the Foundation that the physician will practice the specialty in the geographical service area of the Western Michigan Osteopathic Association.


Procedures

Applications will be sent to applicants as requested. No processing will be done by staff or committee until a completed application is on file. Generally, May 1 is the deadline for having applications and related material submitted to the Executive Director of the Foundation.

After May 1 applications will be forwarded to the Scholarship/Grant committee for review.

At its option, the Scholarship/Grant committee may request or grant requests for personal interviews.
